Public Records Search: Official Inmate, Sex Offender, Court & LLC Portals
The official place to search US public records is the agency that keeps them: the state Department of Corrections for prison inmates, the state sex offender registry, the state judiciary for court cases, and the Secretary of State (or equivalent) for LLCs and corporations. This free directory gives you those official portals for all 50 states plus DC, and the federal and national sources — the BOP Inmate Locator, NSOPW, PACER and SEC EDGAR — with the agency and the page where we found each link. As of October 10, 2026 we verified 199 of 204 state links (98%: inmate locators 50/51, sex offender registries 51/51, court case search 48/51, business entity search 50/51). Where we could not confirm a link on an official page, the card says so instead of guessing. On the official court sites we read, California, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and Wyoming had no statewide trial-court case search, so you search county by county there. There are no paid people-search or background-check links on this page.
Not a background check. Max Intel is not a consumer reporting agency and nothing here is a consumer report. Do not use these records to decide on someone’s employment, housing, credit or insurance. Sex offender registries: misuse can be a crime. NSOPW’s conditions of use say that “Any person who uses information contained in or accessed through this Website to threaten, intimidate, or harass”, or who otherwise misuses it, “may be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability under federal and/or state law.” The Justice Department also says it “does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of the information” and that “it is incumbent upon” users “to verify information.” NSOPW Conditions of Use (read 10 Oct 2026)

How do I find out if someone is in jail?
Start with who is holding the person. Someone serving a state prison sentence will be in that state’s Department of Corrections locator, linked on each state card above. Someone in federal custody will be in the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator, which covers federal inmates “incarcerated from 1982 to the present” BOP Inmate Locator (read 10 Oct 2026). A person who was just arrested is usually in a county or city jail run by the sheriff; local jails are not in this directory, so search the county sheriff’s own website.
VINELink works across many agencies: Grant County, Washington explains that VINE “lets you get updates when an inmate’s custody status changes” and that “VINELink is the online version of VINE” Grant County, WA (read 10 Oct 2026). On 10 October 2026 the corrections departments of Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana and Massachusetts pointed their “find an inmate” link to VINELink rather than to a search of their own. The District of Columbia Department of Corrections has no online locator; it tells the public to call its Records Office at (202) 523-7060 DC DOC (read 10 Oct 2026).
How do I search sex offenders near me?
Use NSOPW, the Justice Department’s national site, for a quick multi-state check, then the state registry for detail. NSOPW searches by name and/or ZIP code (up to five ZIP codes) or by address radius of 1, 2 or 3 miles, but “Only states that provide geographic coordinates for addresses to NSOPW are included in this search” NSOPW search page (read 10 Oct 2026). NSOPW says the jurisdiction information “is not hosted by the Department” NSOPW Conditions of Use — it comes from each state’s registry.
Each state card links that state’s registry exactly as NSOPW’s registry list shows it NSOPW Registries (read 10 Oct 2026). 14 of those 51 addresses are on vendor or portal domains such as communitynotification.com or icrimewatch.net rather than .gov, and 23 still start with http:// — that is how NSOPW publishes them, so we left them unchanged. NSOPW warns that listings “may not reflect current residences”; check with the state registry or local law enforcement before you act, and never use a listing to threaten, intimidate or harass anyone.
How do I look up court records for free?
Use the state judiciary’s case search on the state card. Costs and access differ, and we only quote what each court says:
- Missouri Case.net lists “No fees beyond Internet charges” and covers the statewide case management system Missouri Courts (read 10 Oct 2026).
- Oregon offers “Free basic case information and calendars”; full documents are in the subscription OJCIN service Oregon Judicial Department (read 10 Oct 2026).
- Nebraska’s statewide JUSTICE system is free at courthouse kiosks and law libraries; online, a one-time name search costs $17 and viewing case details costs $2 Nebraska Judicial Branch (read 10 Oct 2026).
- Texas re:SearchTX needs a free account; registered users see public cases and documents back to 11/1/2018, and the Supreme Court required all district and county courts to integrate by 11/1/2025 re:SearchTX FAQ (read 10 Oct 2026).
- Pennsylvania’s UJS Portal shows docket sheets; documents must be requested from the county Clerk or Prothonotary Unified Judicial System of PA (read 10 Oct 2026).
- Kansas: all courts are on Kansas eCourt except Johnson County District Court, according to the state’s records page Kansas Judicial Branch (read 10 Oct 2026).
We found no statewide trial-court case search on the official court sites we read for California, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and Wyoming. In those states search the county superior, district or circuit court, or the county clerk of court; the cards link the official court-finder or clerk directory where one exists. Federal cases are in PACER, which charges $0.10 a page with a $3 cap per document and waives fees for anyone who spends $30 or less in a quarter PACER pricing (read 10 Oct 2026); from January 1, 2027 that becomes 12 cents a page with a $40 quarterly exemption, for five years PACER announcement, 26 Jun 2026. CourtListener, run by the nonprofit Free Law Project, searches opinions and the RECAP Archive of PACER data Free Law Project (read 10 Oct 2026); judyrecords, a private site, also indexes court cases. Neither is a government site.
How do I find who owns an LLC?
Start with the business entity search of the state where the LLC was formed or registered; each state card links it. In most states that is the Secretary of State, but some use another agency — for example the Arizona Corporation Commission, Maryland’s Department of Assessments and Taxation, Michigan’s LARA and Wisconsin’s Department of Financial Institutions.
A state record may not name the owners. The Texas Secretary of State says: “The secretary of state does not maintain any information on the ownership of a LLC,” except “the initial members of a member-managed LLC”. It does keep the registered agent and registered office, and its Public Information Reports “list the names and addresses of a corporation’s or LLC’s officers, directors, managers, or members, as applicable” — information that “is not necessarily current” Texas SOS Management and Ownership FAQs (read 10 Oct 2026). Texas’s SOSDirect also charges a $1.00 statutory fee per search Texas SOS (read 10 Oct 2026). Other states record different things, so read the filings themselves, then pivot: SEC EDGAR full-text search covers filings since 2001 and looks up companies or individuals by name SEC EDGAR (read 10 Oct 2026); court records show lawsuits naming the LLC; OpenCorporates (non-government) can match the same officers across states. How were these links verified?
On 10 October 2026 we read an official page for every link: the agency’s own website, the state judiciary, the Secretary of State, or NSOPW’s registry list for sex offender registries. We copied each address exactly as published and recorded that page as the card’s “source page”. For 18 links the address came from a search result, or from a link our reader could not see, so we opened that official page itself and confirmed the agency on it; for those the card says “portal page read directly”. No address was built from a pattern or guessed. Some official links are on vendor or non-.gov domains (registry vendors, VINELink, Tyler Technologies portals, NJ’s njportal.com); the card flags those.

Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator at bop.gov/inmateloc. It covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. People held in state prisons or county jails are not in it, so use the state card in this directory or the county sheriff’s site for them.
How do I search the sex offender registry by address?

Is it illegal to misuse sex offender registry information?
It can be. NSOPW’s conditions of use say that anyone who uses information from the site to threaten, intimidate, or harass, or who otherwise misuses it, may be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability under federal and/or state law. NSOPW also says the information may not reflect current residences and that users must verify it.
How can I search court records by name for free?
Use the state judiciary’s case search linked on the state card. Some are free, such as Missouri Case.net (no fees beyond internet charges) and Oregon’s free basic case information. Which states have no statewide court records search?
On the official court sites we read on October 10, 2026 we found no statewide trial-court case search for California, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and Wyoming. In those states search each county court or clerk of court. We could not verify a case-search link for Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee, so their cards are marked not verified.
How do I look up an LLC or business entity?
Use the business entity search of the state where the company was formed or registered; each state card links it. Can I use these records to screen a tenant, employee or borrower?
Not through this page. Max Intel is not a consumer reporting agency and these portals are not consumer reports. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, consumer report information can only be provided to someone with a purpose the Act allows, and employers who get background reports from a company must give written notice, get written permission and follow adverse-action steps. Use an FCRA-compliant screening company for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions.
Why does a card say Not verified yet?
Because we could not confirm that link on an official page on October 10, 2026, usually because the site blocked automated reading or did not show the link. Rather than guess an address, we leave the card blank. Search the state’s official .gov website for the agency instead.
