🕶️ Is Someone Recording You With Smart Glasses? How to Tell

Camera glasses look like normal frames. Here are the tells, a Bluetooth app that flags them, what happens to the footage, and where they are banned.

Quick answer: Look for a small light near the hinge. Meta’s glasses show a capture light while recording, and since August 2026 they stop recording if it is covered mid-video 9to5Google (28 Aug 2026). You can also run a Bluetooth app that flags nearby glasses by maker, though it gives false alarms Malwarebytes (25 Feb 2026). Neither is proof, so if you are unsure, ask.

The light is not a guarantee. Hardware mods have disabled it in the past, and Meta only closed the cover-it-after-you-start trick in August 2026 9to5Google (28 Aug 2026). Treat any camera-shaped dot on a frame as a possible camera.

How can I tell if someone’s glasses are recording?

  • The capture light. A small light on the front of the frame turns on while the camera records. Meta says its glasses disable the camera if they detect that light covered, tampered with or destroyed 9to5Google (28 Aug 2026).
  • The camera itself. Look for a pinhole lens at one corner of the frame, beside the hinge. Thick arms on otherwise ordinary frames are another hint.
  • The wearer’s habits. A tap on the arm of the frame, or a spoken “Hey Meta”, often starts a photo, video or AI query.
  • A Bluetooth scan. Smart glasses advertise over Bluetooth Low Energy. See the next section.

Is there an app that detects smart glasses?

Yes, for Android. Nearby Glasses, by independent developer Yves Jeanrenaud, scans Bluetooth advertising signals. It alerts you when it sees a maker linked to smart glasses, such as Meta, Luxottica or Snap Malwarebytes (25 Feb 2026). The alert reads “Smart Glasses are probably nearby” Malwarebytes (25 Feb 2026).

Know its limits. Meta Quest headsets can trigger it, and it cannot tell whether anyone is recording, or what Malwarebytes (25 Feb 2026). Glasses with Bluetooth off will not show at all. Our Bluetooth tracker guide explains how these scans work.

What happens to what the glasses record?

Photos and video go to the wearer’s phone app. AI features change the picture. In April 2025 Meta turned camera AI on by default for its Ray-Ban glasses TechCrunch (30 Apr 2025). Voice recordings after “Hey Meta” can be kept up to a year to improve Meta’s products, with no opt-out TechCrunch (30 Apr 2025). Owners can only delete them one by one TechCrunch (30 Apr 2025). Bystanders in photos analysed by the AI may end up in that data too TechCrunch (30 Apr 2025).

In October 2026 some owners said their glasses recorded audio unprompted. Meta said the issue had been resolved 9to5Google (15 Oct 2026).

Can smart glasses identify me?

Not out of the box. But in 2024 two Harvard students showed how close it is. Their I-XRAY demo streamed glasses video to a program that found faces, searched the web for matches and pulled up names and details. The whole process could take just a couple of minutes Engadget (2 Oct 2024). They did not release the code Engadget (2 Oct 2024).

The weak points were face search engines and people-search sites. Removing yourself from those makes this kind of lookup harder. See our face search guide and data broker removal comparison.

Where are smart glasses banned?

  • MSC Cruises bans them in public areas. Its rule covers devices “capable of covertly or discreetly recording or transmitting data”, and security can confiscate them Cruise Hive (11 Dec 2025).
  • Royal Caribbean bars use in public restrooms, youth areas, medical areas and the casino, among others Royal Caribbean Blog (11 Feb 2026).
  • Many gyms, changing rooms, hospitals, courts and workplaces have their own camera rules. Check the posted policy.

Is it legal to record me with smart glasses?

In most of the US, filming in a public place is legal, because there is no expectation of privacy there. Audio is different. Some states require every party to agree before a conversation is recorded. Places where you expect privacy, such as bathrooms and changing rooms, are protected almost everywhere.

If you think someone is recording you, ask. You can also ask a venue to enforce its rules. If you find a hidden camera in a rental, see our counter-surveillance field guide. This section explains general principles; it is not legal advice.
