💼 Fake Job Offer and Recruiter Scams: Red Flags and Checks

Task scams grew from almost nothing to tens of thousands of reports in four years. Here is how they and fake recruiters work, and how to check an offer.

Quick answer: A job that finds you by text or WhatsApp, pays you to “like” or “boost” products, or asks you to pay to unlock earnings is a scam. The FTC’s rule: never pay money to get paid FTC (12 Dec 2024). To check a recruiter, find the company’s careers page yourself and confirm the job and the person there.

Task scams exploded. FTC reports went from none in 2020 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024 alone. Reported job scam losses passed $220 million in those six months FTC (12 Dec 2024).

How do task scams work?

  1. Contact out of nowhere. A text or WhatsApp message offers easy online work, with few details FTC (12 Dec 2024).
  2. Simple tasks. You “optimise apps” or “boost products” by clicking through them FTC (12 Dec 2024).
  3. Small payouts. You earn a little at first, which makes it feel real FTC (12 Dec 2024).
  4. The hook. To unlock bigger tasks or withdraw earnings, you must deposit your own money, often in crypto FTC (12 Dec 2024).
  5. Gone. The deposits never come back. Crypto losses to job scams hit $41 million in the first half of 2024 FTC (12 Dec 2024).

The FTC adds that paying people to rate or “like” things online is illegal, and honest companies don’t do it FTC (12 Dec 2024).

How do fake recruiter scams work?

These copy real hiring. The scammer uses a real company’s name, a convincing job post and sometimes a short chat interview. The aim is one of three things:

  • Your money. Fees for training, equipment, background checks or a starter kit.
  • Your identity. A Social Security number, ID scan and bank details “for payroll” before any real offer.
  • Your account. A cheque to deposit and a request to send part of it back. The cheque later bounces, and you owe the bank.

  • If you gave a Social Security number, freeze your credit and file at IdentityTheft.gov.
  • Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or 877-382-4357 FTC (12 Dec 2024).
